There has been two rv's at the cove at Calaveras that look like they have set up house. What's up with that? They are taking up valuable fishing space. One rv has dogs that won't let you get by. I thougt when you rented a site you don't rent the shoreline. We would love to give comments or suggestions on-line if you had somewhere to do so.

The RV sites were built for employees. Those that aren’t currently being used by employees are rented to the public. The RV sites in question are being used by employees. Please be respectful and do not walk through someone’s personal space.

other posters questions

there is no submerged timber or anything, it’s not like alot of other lakes… the reds are on fire on downriggers at 17-22 ft.. swimbaits been the key lately…

I would like to know why there are boaters in the cove without tags. Where are the Game Wardens or any enforcers out there checking. There is this one boater casting his net and keeping almost everything caught. Tuesday he was there casting his net yet again and had another person gutting everything caught. He has been out here everyday this week.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is responsible for enforcing boating and fishing regulations on both Braunig and Calaveras Lakes. Any tips to catch a Bass or a Red? What should I bring for Bait/Lures?

Reds will bite on live crawfish, shrimp and other live baits. Bass will hit on rat l traps. Well I dont own boat am wondering wheres the best place to catch a fish from bank. Never caught a Red and sure would like to, but a cat will do. Also, are crawfish good bait to use, which is better live or dead? Oh by the way, Im fishing Calaveras Lake. Thank you so much.

Most of the shoreline does offer good bank fishing. We also have a fishing pier. Yes live crawfish is excellent bait for reds. Certain portions of the bank do require wading out to cast far enough out to reach deeper water. Good luck.

BTW, there are several cats running loose on the property. If you can catch one feel free to take it with you. ;-)

what time does the front gate open a.m. and close p.m? Our fall/winter hours are 6 am-8 pm. Information on annual and daily permits can be found here. You may leave and return so long as the gate is open and your permit has not expired. Yes, at the far east end on the south side of the lake near Dead Tree Point. At Calaveras it is on the far south end near the dam.

do you take credit cards to pay for fees?

MasterCard and VISA.

Rattle Spot

Feb 21 using Red Rattle Spot caught 7 Hybrids and 1 Red drum..Mid afternoon partly cloudy..water temp 60.5..along dam and side road south side from Kayak.

Hi Brawny Cal, any chance in doing a family fishing lesson for the Texas spring break weekend March 10-12? We don't know how to fish but want to learn and thought it would be nice to camp nearby and see if you were available to teach how to fish. What might you charge for something like that?

Send an email to me at brawnycal@braunig-calaveras.info and we can discuss the options.

I'm new to the area and need a place to take my boat out to do some fishing. Which lake is better fishing, Braunig or Calaveras? Thanks.

Both Lakes offer excellent fishing. Calaveras is known for a prodigus amount of Red Drum. While Braunig has Red Drum it offers a greater amount of Large Mouth Bass. Both Lakes have generous amount of Catfish. Good luck.—Brawny Cal

During this time of the year what is the best type of bait to be using off the bank?

Fishing from the bank worms are the best bet for Catfish/Bass. If you wade out into the lake and cast far enough out live minnows for possible Redfish and Hybrid. Frozen shrimp is also another choice for a variety of fish. Good Luck!

are there any boat rental,s yet thank you

We don’t have boat rentals in the parks but Killa Bait, the bait shop just outside the gate at Calaveras, has boats for rent. Their phone number is (210) 635-8686.

whats the winter pattern for reds ? if someone really wanted to try to catch reds(from a boat) in winter what would be the most appropriate technique.

With the lack of crawfish these time if the year, your best bet is to throw rattle trap 1/2 or 3/4 silver with blue or black back. Throw in water at least 25, or 30 feet. Allow lure to drop 20 feet and begin retrieve. Good Luck!

As an individual from the midwest, I love catching a mess of bluegill for a fish fry. I have read many reports but have not heard anything regarding pan fish in either lake. Could yall give me some clarity on this? Thank you!

Both Lakes offer plenty of Blue gill. They can easily be found around bank and ramps (Fishing pier as well). Worms are your best bait. Good luck.
